There has been a great deal of news surrounding disabled passengers and their delayed departure times from airplanes, trains and coaches. As Stanley are providers of mobility stair climbers we thought we would discuss our mobility stair climbers as a viable solution to the problem.
It’s been recently reported that disabled passengers have been left waiting up to 100 minutes to exit an air craft. With one passenger describing one ‘extreme case’ where a captain and first officer had to carry him off a plane because, after an hour of waiting, as the only exit was via staircase.

Another similar story mentioned a wheelchair user travelling by train also encountered a delay when exiting a train. He noted that he was left waiting up to an hour waiting for assistance, when finally, a cleaner came to his aid. These stories are a couple among many, with the less-abled bodied put off travelling for the fear of losing their mobility aid or left unassisted.

Could mobility stair climbers be the answer?
Stanley mobility stair climbers have had much success in recent years, providing specialist stair climbing solutions to care homes, cruise liners, premier league stadiums and many more. There are different variations of stair climbers suitable for many unique environments and with Stanley Mobility we offer two machines.
The first is the Jolly, this model eliminates the transfer process completely, enabling users to be transported in the comfort of their own wheelchair. What’s great about this machine is its ability to be folded down, with the added benefit of accommodating wheelchair users on indoor stairs as well as outdoors.
However, with the stories mentioned above, it may be that the Tolo stair climber would be the best solution for vacating vehicles. This machine is a purpose-built stair climber which can be customised with many configurations to cater to different users. Such attachments relate to lateral support, retractor pads and driving controls for the user to operate the machine. It’s perfect for stair climbing on narrow landings and spiral stair cases which makes it a great recommendation for exiting air craft, trains and coaches.
Mobility stair climber benefits
As mentioned previously both stair climbers can climb stairs in any location and can be charged overnight ready for use as and when needed. The Tolo and the Jolly are also fitted with individual braking systems and each feature a safety belt for secure fastening. Certificated training is advised but not compulsory as the machines are touch-button operated and very simple to use. Stanley Mobility recommends training as a precaution to ensure operators are fully confident and knowledgeable when using the machines.
