A day out in town that included a boat trip on the Thames, a champagne reception at the London Eye and a lunch with presentations at a riverside restaurant helped Stanley Handling celebrate sixty years in the materials handling industry.
1948 will be remembered for a number of significant events; the launch of the NHS, the London Olympics and the first flight of the iconic De Havilland Comet. On a smaller stage, Norman Stanley and his wife began marketing a hand operated hydraulic tool and die handler known as the Hydratruck for use in press shops – a product that is still in use today.
The company is now one of the UK’s leading independent materials handling specialists, leading the way in the design and engineering of bespoke equipment solutions for highly specialised and demanding applications. This, underpinned by a real belief in customer service, remains at the heart of the company’s portfolio.
After Hydratruck, the company introduced pallet handling equipment with a powered pedestrian truck soon joined by ride-on models. Taking its name from the Latin for oak - implying strength and dependability - the ROBUR range now comprises the full spectrum of handling equipment, from powered pallet trucks, stackers and counterbalanced units to specialist handling equipment such as stainless steel trucks, reel handlers, four-way stackers and highly sophisticated bespoke units.
The company is enjoying growing demand for its PowerMate and Sprinter powered stair climbers which are contributing to productivity and health and safety in sectors as diverse as retail deliveries, office equipment, vending, the utilities, manufacturing and general distribution. In addition, a 25,000 line mail order catalogue for production, commercial and warehouse use is available in print and online.
Storage equipment has always been a big part of the company’s portfolio and Stanley recently fitted out the warehouse at the striking new National Cat Centre in Sussex with pallet racking and shelving after being asked, initially, to replace an ageing though reliable ROBUR powered stacker!
The company offers industry leading product training and after sales care as well as a range of general operator training and handling safety courses. In fact the company’s Harpenden base is one of the first venues in the South East hosting City & Guilds ‘Train the Trainer’ manual handling courses.
Director Sarah Stanley says the company owes its successful first sixty years to three things: “The quality and commitment of our people, the engineering innovation, excellence and reliability of our products and the safety we build into everything we do,” she says. “In a business where everyone claims to provide ‘solutions’, we have always tried to go that bit further to understand our clients needs and ensure they get the right products and the best service.”
