Integrated Storage & Handling Solution for Kenneth Turner

The country's leading supplier of quality gifts, floral decorations and fragrances, Kenneth Turner, has turned to Stanley Handling seeking an integrated storage and handling solution for operations in the company's 2000msq warehouse in Hemel Hempstead.

The company sells to prestige outlets including Harrods, Selfridges, John Lewis and House of Fraser - territories where delays and shortfalls in supply are not an option.

With Kenneth Turner having stated a desire to use Euro pallets for incoming bulk loads, Stanley recommended the use of a ROBUR SBT stacker for vehicle off-loading and stacking, plus 100-position heavy duty adjustable pallet racking for bulk storage. For light duty general handling around the warehouse Stanley recommended two ROBUR HPTQ pallet trucks, with four bay runs of double-entry long span shelving in picking areas.

Space-saving stacker By adopting the ROBUR SB powered lift and drive stacker requiring a significantly smaller turning circle than a conventional forklift or a reach truck, access aisles were kept as small as possible to make the most of available space, whilst both initial and operational costs of pallet handling were minimised. Such stackers cost less than half that of an equivalent forklift whilst undertaking most, if not all, the duties. It follows that maintenance and training requirements are correspondingly lower.

For this application, the SBT is ideal! Fitted with a Triplex mast it has a lift of 5800mm and its robust construction and stepless electronic speed control ensure safe, smooth operation even at the extremes of operational capability. The 90degree aisle requirement with a 1000mm load is just 2150mm. The model range offers capacities from 1200 to 3000kg and features include a free view mast, heavy duty 24V electrics, a battery discharge indicator plus many safety features including electromagnetic braking. Options include straddle leg configuration, full free lift mast, plus short and adjustable forks.

Reliable Handling
The ROBUR HPTQ pallet trucks feature a straightforward three-position operating handle with quick-lift fork elevation and a low profile lowered height of 51mm. Capacity is 2000kg and fork length 1000mm. Options within the range include forks lengths from 600 to 2500mm, fork widths from 450 to 685mm plus a stainless steel version for use in abrasive environments and high hygiene areas. Operational reliability is assured, with over one million ROBUR trucks operating worldwide!

Operator training, together with a two year service contract, formed part of the project.

Realistic about safety and efficiency
Whilst Kenneth Turner is synonymous with "the finest and most innovative creations and ideas," Managing Director Tony McFarland has ensured that when it comes to storage, handling and distribution the company has its feet well and truly on the ground.

"Everything about the new storage and handling system at Kenneth Turner is geared to safety and operating efficiency. Space has been used wisely, handling activities are straightforward and comply with relevant health and safety legislation and the right mechanised equipment has been deployed."

In selecting a supplier the company chose Stanley Handling, a storage and handling specialist with over fifty years experience of providing such quality storage and handling solutions. Nothing but nothing has been left to chance which is typical of Kenneth Turner.
