Handling Patterns Change for the better at Cherry Electrical Products Ltd

Following an increasing trend for UK industrial companies to concentrate on distribution and service, Luton-based Cherry Electrical, who supply swap action switches, automotive products, keyboards and mice, moved to new premises and a re-organised its handling patterns.

Using Headroom
Key to the successful change was the acquisition of a ROBUR SBT 5816 powered stacker from long-term handling equipment supplier Stanley Handling.

With a triplex mast allowing stacking of Europallets up to 5.8m this model ensures that Cherry has the opportunity to make full use of available headroom in the storage area. In fact, with new racking, it is now able to store more in the considerably reduced area than previously and currently still have capacity to spare.

The ROBUR SB family of powered stackers gives capacity options from 1200 to 3000kg and lift heights from 1600 to 5800mm. Standard features include powered lift and drive, electronic speed control, heavy duty 24V electrics. Safety elements include an electric horn, an operator's safety button and a top speed limiter.

In addition to full free lift, duplex and triplex masts, options include straddle leg configuration and adjustable forks.

Minimising Costs
Stackers like the SB offer excellent manoeuvrability, using a fraction of the space traditionally required by a forklift and achieving substantially reduced operating and maintenance costs. Cherry's Patrick McGinn readily recognises that the combination of the machine's compact nature and high stacking capability were crucial factors in the successful move. "This has enabled us to accommodate more stock in less space, with additional capacity for the future" he says.

An essential part of the project was operator training, provided by Stanley Handling - required as part of conformance with current manual handling safety legislation.

A service contract, under which the stacker is regularly maintained by experienced Stanley field engineers, also formed part of the contract.
